Playing for Success

Playing for Success (PfS) is a partnership between the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF), local authorities and a broad range of sporting clubs. The initiative has established study support centres within clubs’ grounds and sporting venues.

In Coventry, there are two PfS centres based at Coventry City Football Club (The Ricoh Arena) and Coventry Rugby Football Club (The Butts Arena). Centres are equipped with the latest ICT facilities and provide out of hours study support for students in KS2 and KS3. Children access 20 hours of educational activities delivered at the Football Club or the Rugby Club PfS centre over 6-7 weeks. The sessions motivate students to learn through the association with sport and takes advantage of the latest technology to help raise standards in literacy, numeracy and ICT.

The Coventry PfS centres work closely with the Schools Improvement Service, consultants, Extended Services and other partners to support educational attainment. Rewards and incentives such as matchday tickets, player attendance at Celebration Events, and other prizes are used to recognise improved skills, motivation and self esteem, giving students a real boost and, in many cases, a new start on which they can build on back at school.
